1. Program Aims
Biotechnology is the application of science and engineering to develop useful products from biological materials. Biotechnology is a very broad area, ranging from cloning to cheese-making, with industrial applications including waste management and the manufacture of products such as antibiotics and beer. The programs within the biotechnology network aim to:
provide all-round development and biotechnological education suited to the needs of students, employers and relevant professions.
produce successful and adaptable students with both subject-specific and transferable skills as bioengineer, biotechnologist, food technologist, laboratory technician, pharmaceutical engineer, quality assurance officer.
prepare students for employment, further study or research in crown research institutes, food and dairy industry, pharmaceutical industry, private research companies, universities and polytechnics.
2. School subjects required
Successful students will be able to develop and demonstrate transferable intellectual skills, in particular their abilities as follows:
Acquire a knowledge base including key concepts, principles and theories of mathematics and chemistry.
Acquire basic theories and experiment skills including the major traditional biological disciplines of botany, microbiology and zoology with the interdisciplinary subjects of biochemistry, cell biology, genetics, molecular biology, genetic engineering, cell engineering and fermentation engineering.
Understand the theory, application and latest development situation on the biological technology, and biotechnology industry.
Develop practical and cognitive skills of analysis and synthesis in the context of biological investigation, and work independently in planning and undertaking assignments.
Use IT to access sources of information, and communicate clearly in speech, writing and other appropriate modes of expression.
