1. Program Aims
Biological Sciences is for those who love life. The programs within the Biology Science network aim to:
provide all-round development and biological education suited to the needs of students, employers and relevant professions;
produce successful and adaptable students with both subject-specific and transferable skills as biochemical technician, bio-security officer, conservation officer, ecologist, geneticist, medical research assistant and zoo curator;
prepare students for employment, further study or research in agricultural and fisheries sectors, biotechnology industry, conservation sector, crown research industries, local bodies and regional councils, medical and animal health diagnostic laboratories.
2. School subjects required
Successful students will be able to develop and demonstrate transferable intellectual skills, in particular their ability as follows:
Acquire a knowledge base including key concepts, principles and theories of mathematics and chemistry.
Acquire basic theories and experiment skills including the major traditional biological disciplines of botany, microbiology and zoology with the interdisciplinary subjects of biochemistry, cell biology, genetics, molecular biology and ecology.
Understand the theory, application and latest development situation on biological sciences.
Develop practical and cognitive skills of analysis and synthesis in the context of biological investigation, and work independently in planning and undertaking assignments.
Use IT to access sources of information, and communicate clearly in speech, writing and other appropriate modes of expression.
